NOTE:
Original English version below.

Answered by guitarist Ivar Bjørnson. Questions by the forum users.

Xanceda:
• How do you see the Metal scene today? Is there a resurgence that seems to
indicate a return of the bands who triumphed in the 80's?

Ivar: I think the Metal scene is both in a good shape in the sense that it is big again,
after a down period in the 90s where it was all about techno and grunge. But the sad
thing is that so many of the giants are the same as in the 80s! Why is there no new Iron
Maiden or Slayer? Too many of today’s bands are doing it for the wrong reasons: they
want to create a career, become famous and swim around in naked women. Well, we
all do – but the decadence should be the consequence, not the original motivation!

Xanceda:
• By law of life, many of the greats of the genre will fade in coming years, some
have already announced their withdrawal as Judas Priest. Is there relief to fill
that hole?

Ivar: To be honest I am not sure about that. There are not the same grandiose visions
that these great bands had when they started. You know, after a while the kids lose
interest in bands that keep singing about nothing and only wants to secure their bank
accounts, not actually having any ambition to change anything.

Xanceda:
• What do you think of grunge music and falling in the 90's Metal mostly in the
U.S.A, and as you see your current scene? Is it so different from European as it
looks?

Ivar: I guess I answered this a little bit earlier. I think it was a very sad time for Metal –
but perhaps also necessary to awaken the Metal scene. Maybe we wouldn’t have had
such a strong Black Metal scene that emerged in the early 90s if they didn’t react to the
wining of the grunge movement. Well, now I don’t think the US scene is necessarily so
very different from the European; it used to be a lot more different some years back.
Perhaps the Internet makes the world smaller and thereby diminishes the differences?

Mohenjo:
• There is great camaraderie in groups of northern Europe at the time to
participate in different projects. Sometimes it gives the feeling that is like one
big family. Do you think this may be the essence of strength and dynamism that
is today the "Black" and its variants?

Ivar: I definitely think this ethos to begin with was part of why the Northern Extreme
movement got so far in such a short time: the big bands were helping the up and
coming ones and the common front helped all the bands forward. I think it is sad that a
lot of this spirit disappeared when some of the bands started to think they looked bigger
themselves by looking down at others. But it only hurt themselves in the long run...

Maldo:
• 3 months after the release of "Ethica Odini Axiom, you occupy the No. 11 on the
charts in Norway, do you expect such a sales success?

Ivar: I never have expectations in relation to sales – only to the musical achievements! I
was really positively surprised to see how well the album was selling immediately after
its release. If somebody told me 20 years ago that we would be on the Norwegian
charts I would laugh hehe.

Maldo:
• It is clear that after several years with the same lineup you have found a high
degree of stability, in what way does this fact influence your compositions?

Ivar: The biggest result is in the songwriting: when you get to work as closely for a long
time as we have now; I think I am writing music in a more “personal” way in terms of
the other instruments. For instance; I know when our drummer Cato sounds his best,
and perhaps I am subconsciously aiming the compositions towards those “zones”.
Then of course there is the more psycho-social aspects of knowing each other better
and trusting each other: a band like that simply sounds better!

Dupin:
• What’s your opinion about music downloads in internet?

Ivar: I am very happy that we have been a part of that discussion since the beginning –
many bands have been cowards because they want to be friends with everybody. What
we have said all the time is that there is no problem with downloads in itself; it is much
like the cassette-copying and –trading we were doing in the late 80s and early 90s. It is
the big-scale commercial pirating we objected. I guess many fans realized what we
were talking about when the Pirate Bay trial exposed that the guys behind the site were
making millions from selling advertisement: they weren’t the Robin Hoods they were
pretending to be.

Andrómeda:
• How to find in Black Metal the way of a perfect artistic expression?

Ivar: If I knew that I would be very rich haha. I think the perfect expression is
somewhere between technical abilities and raw visions – too much technical focus
strangles the visions, while a lack of talent obscures the visions...

Dskalabra2:
• this year 2011 is the Enslaved 20 th anniversary and you have just released a
new album, out of this album you will do something special to celebrate the
anniversary of the band throughout the year?.

Ivar: Oh yes, we will be doing a few things. We will have a party of course here in
Bergen in May (which is the month of the actual 20th anniversary). Then we will do a
special gig in Oslo also in May were we will do some cover songs from bands that has
influenced us but perhaps are a bit different than people would expect. Then of course
there will be touring in Europe and the US and we are looking into going some places
we haven’t been yet also!

MatterHorn:
• When a live CD?

Ivar: good question. I think we might try to record a live DVD towards the end of this
year, and I always wanted to release also a CD/ LP with just the sound for those who
prefer that. Maybe this time my dream would come through? If so it would be
happening it would come out in 2012 I guess.

Slayer:
• With what group you want to share tour sometime?

Ivar: My dream would be to tour with King Crimson! Also from the “traditional” Metal
world Iron Maiden would be a big dream for me, particularly now with their very strong
last album.

Matraco:
• Know something of the Spanish black metal scene? If so, what is your opinion?

Ivar: I have to admit that I have almost no knowledge about it, I hope you can forgive
my ignorance on that topic.

Matraco:
• Of the new bands that come in black metal, some that catches your attention?

Ivar: Sure, there is still some interesting up and comings, even though I wish there be a
wider undergrowth in this genre. Some of the good new ones (even though some has
“old” people in them”) are Triptykon, Vulture Industries, Ihsahn, Secrets of the Moon
and I guess a bunch more I can’t remember right now.

Matraco:
• When presenting the new album in concerts, you have something pre-recorded
or some kind of help?

Ivar: Nope, it is simply the sound of five people. We have one song from “Vertebrae”
than uses a sequencer; the opening song “Clouds” – when we played that we had the
sequencer running from tape – but that is it. No extra vocal tracks or pre-recorded
synths...

SNM:
• In addition to Black metal, what other kind of music do you listen?

Ivar: Almost everything else also except R’n’B, Blues and World Music haha. I do listen
a lot to prog rock and classic rock when not listening to (Black) Metal.

SNM
• Recommends some albums of any group or musical style.

Ivar: “Substrata” by Biosphere (Norwegian Ambient), “Red” by King Crimson (UK prog
rock from the 60/70s) and “ObZen” by Meshuggah

SNM:
• Albums that have surprised you most in 2010?

Ivar: The Norwegian Metal/ Jazz band Shining (not to be confused with the Swedish
suicidal outfit) managed to surprise me with the “BlackJazz” album-even though I had
heard them before this album was quite the surprise.

SNM:
• What changes will attract more attention in the international scene since the
beginning of the wave Norwegian black metal.

Ivar: There has been a mind blowing increase in professionalism since the start; both
for the good and the bad. The good side is of course the better abilities, better
productions on the albums (except for the lo-fi lovers of course), bigger tours and so on
– better tools to get their message and visions across to the listener. If the vision and
message has “died” in the process is another discussion hehe.

SNM:
• You have participated in numerous projects outside Enslaved, have you thought
about any project out of metal music?

Ivar: Why not? I like music, not only Metal even though I am a metal head in life style. I
work a little bit also with noise artist Lasse Marhaug, but I guess it is still quite close to
Metal. We’ll see!

That’s all!! Thank you very much for your time. Is there anything else you want to say to
your Spanish fans?

Ivar: Thank you so much for these questions, and your yearlong support from Spain!
See you on tour and thanks for listening!
